Takoda    DoC & Mook

With special tribute to Little Puss

Bryan & I share our lives with 3 cats, one Peach Face Love Bird, and a Beta fish named Fancy Pants. All our cats are indoor cats only (for more information on why see A Tribute to my grand old Lady )  I have been a cat lover all my life, and doubt I could survive living without my cats! This is my pet "brag" album. I love this page and had fun collecting the quotes.  Enjoy, Cheers, Cheryl Eckstein  PS... I keep adding because Takoda is truly fun to watch, except see last row where he is in our closet - not fun when he wakes us up at 3 am to go hanger hunting!

"There is, incidentally, no way of talking about cats that enables one to come off as a sane person." - Dan Greenberg

This is Little Puss, I adopted her as a kitten in 1976. Puss died December 12, 2006. It's hard to look at her photos without missing her.

Little Puss Born Spring 1976 ~ 2006. She was over 30 years old (in human years) when she died. "

"There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats." - Albert Schweitzer

Puss was diagnosed with Squamous cell carcinoma in Oct. 06. I spoon fed her all her meals, giving her the best palliative care I could.

Dr Smith is a remarkable veterinarian, helping as best he could. It was in her jaw and day before she died, it broke her jaw. Yet she fought so hard to live. She was a purrfect cat all her life.

~" There are no ordinary cats." - Colette

Last Christmas together, Doc keeping his usual vigil close to Little Puss

"There is no such thing as 'just a cat'." - Robert A. Heinlein

~ "To understand a cat, you must realize that he has has own gifts, his own viewpoint, even his own morality." - Lilian Jackson Braun

Takoda, isn't he just the sweetest kitten! ~ we adopted him a month after Puss died, from a rescue shelter

I named himTakoda ~It's a Native Souix name that means "friend to everyone" which suits him purrfectly!

"If a cat does something, we call it instinct; if we do the same thing, for the same reason, we call it intelligence. - Will Cuppy

Takoda peeking out of Bryan's jacket, as we leave to take him with us to his new home

"One cat just leads to another." - Ernest Hemingway.

~ "One small cat changes coming home to an empty house to coming home."- Pam Brown

Our first night together January 23, 2007. Takoda is 13 weeks here, and was very sick with high fever of 104. Had to rush him to the vet the next day

Takoda was a very sick kitty for a few days, poor baby

" A meow massages the heart."- Stuart McMillan

Takoda ... I have not seen him lay like that since ~ how did he get his legs behind his head like that?

"Thousands of years ago, cats were worshipped as gods. Cats have never forgotten this." - Anonymous

Whenever I wash my face or brush my teeth, Takoda has to have a turn. He loves running water!

"Some people own cats and go on to lead normal lives." - Unknown

Here he is in our downstairs bathroom - doesn't matter where, he loves drinking out of the tap

"Four little persians, but only one looked in my direction. I extednded a tentative finger and two soft paws clung to it. There was a contented sound of purring, I suspect on both our parts. - George Frredley

Takoda watching a documentary on Cats ... too funny! Who needs television when you have cats?

"Cats are dangerous companions for writers because cat watching is a near-perfect method of writing avoidance." - Dan Greenburg

Please ... no pictures, I just woke up! Shy guy Takoda Jan. 29.07 "A little drowsing cat is an image of perfect beatitude." - Jules Champfleury

" Kittens are born with their eyes shut. They open them in about six days, take a look around, then close them again for the better part of their lives. - Stephen Baker

Mook adopted us about 12 years ago. She ran across my yard up to me, purring, & rubbing against my legs. We never found her previous owner.

She's very sweet, and licks & grooms Takoda as if he were her own kitten! See next slide

"There are few things in life more heartwarming than to be welcomed by a cat. " - Tay Hohoff

Mook gently & lovingly grooming Takoda, and Takoda loving every second of it. "All cats like being the focus of attention."- Peter Gray

"What greater gift than the love of a cat?" - Charles Dickens

Doc & Takoda looking out our bedroom window at the birds who come to our many feeders that hang on our trees.

I took a series of these & in each they both are looking in the same direction, like a mirror image.

"The reason cats climb is so that they can look down on almost every other animal...its also the reason they hate birds." - KC Buffington"

Doc & Little Puss ~as you can see she was small. She was tiny all her life never weighing more than 4 pounds

" The smallest feline is a masterpiece." - Leonardo Da Vinci

This is a daily ritual ~ when Bryan comes home from work, Doc races to the door to meet him and demands to get his "love love" pets.

This usually goes on for 10 minutes. The look on Doc's face tells all, he wants much more ATTENTION !

"If there was any petting to be done...he chose to do it. Often he would sit looking at me, and then, moved by a delicate affection, come and pull at my coat and sleeve until he could touch my face with his nose, and then go away contented." - Charles Dudley Warner

Okay, I'm really NOT happy now! Poor Bryan after a hard day at work dry-walling. But Doc will get his way,

Bryan will always put his things down to pet him, scratch his head and have their talk!

"Dogs have owners, cats have staff." - Unknown

"I would never find need of a fireman to get my cat down from a tree. All I would have to do is open a can of cat food, and tap the side of his dish with my spoon!" Cheryl Eckstein

Awww, my two boys purrfectly happy together.

"He seems the incarnation of everything soft and silky and velvety, without a sharp edge in his composition, a dreamer whose philosophy is sleep and let sleep." - Saki

"Your cat may never have to hunt farther than the kitchen counter for its supper nor face a predator more fierce than the vacuum cleaner..." - Barbara L. Diamond

MOOK, this was not staged! She loves laying by the fireplace, where I put the two carved cats.

"How nice it is to think that feline dreams, like our own, are painted with creative brush strokes from time to time. Perhaps my cats and I even share the same dream: a world where all kittens are wanted and loved, and where every cat has a safe, warm place to sleep...and to dream." - Barbara L. Diamond

DOC ~ I love to watch him like this, he looks like a LION pearched on a tree limb ~ he always has one leg hanging down when he sleeps on the cat tree

'God made the cat in order that man might have the pleasure of caressing the lion.

- Fernand Mery

I'm begging you, please NO! ! ! PLEASE I'm really begging . . . no no no way!

"After scolding one's cat one looks into its face and is seized by the ugly suspicion that it understood every word. And has filed it for reference."- Charlotte Gray

NO! I'M NOT BRUSHING MY TEETH WITH THAT MONSTER . . . DON'T EVEN TRY! I'LL SMACK IT OUT OF YOUR HAND IF YOU COME NEAR ME WITH THAT ..... MONSTER

"Everything I know I learned from my cat: When you're hungry, eat. When you're tired, nap in a sunbeam. When you go to the vet's, pee on your owner. - Gary Smith

DOC, MOOK & TAKODA, they were not happy to poise together and you can see it by their ears and expressions, but I was going to have my way!

Takoda is growing so fast, he won't be my "little" kitten for too much longer - I think he is going to be a big fellow

"No heaven will not ever be Heaven be; Unless my cats are there to welcome me." - Unknown

PLEASE MOM TURN OFF THE LIGHTS, I'M TRYING TO GET SOME SLEEP!

Takoda is so different than the other cats, often sleeping in very different positions. He uses his paws in ways I've not seen the others do. As he lay fast asleep so safely under my arm, his body quivered & jerked. Was he dreaming of chasing the feathered toys I bought him- or preparing himself to pounce on his unsuspecting victim. Or was he being attacked - should I wake you little one & save you, or would I be spoiling all your fun? "I have seen How the cat trembles while sleeping The night runs over him like dark water"- Pablo Neruda

While the cats are away, the bird will play ... our other Peach face loved bird who died, used to say "here kitty kitty kitty ...

but so far, this one refuses to talk - but that's okay, she's a true 'love" bird, who never ever bites. We also have a Beta fish named FANCY PANTS and a few Tetra .. it's a zoo!!

~ "I never married because there was no need. I have three pets at home which answer the same purpose as a husband. I have a dog which growls every morning, a parrot which swears all afternoon, and a cat that comes home late at night." - Maria Corelli

What's Takoda up ... uh, down to now?

Click on photo for larger view

He accidently dropped his toy (bottle cap) in the toilet ... he was so determined to fish it out, and was successful in the end.

He has tried to flush the tolet by smacking the handle with his paw, he'll get it one day I'm sure! Click on photo for larger view

Sometimes I feel this bed is just too small for us! This wasn't a staged shot either, Takoda loves to sneak under the covers -

Doc always sleeps on that pillow above my head .... hmmm maybe a bit too much information here :-)

Bryan and Cheryl "Nobody" Eckstein.

"As every cat owner knows, nobody owns a cat." - Ellen Perry Berkeley

"There are many intelligent species in the universe. They are all owned by cats.

Enchore .... Enchore!!

This was Boss, he was almost identical to Doc in markings. My poor boy had a serious heart condition - he died of heart failure. Hardly a day goes by where I don't miss him. (1991 - 1995)

"I think I can open this just a bit more - I've got to!"

"Augh, can't reach, what to do - WHAT to do??"

"Right, stepping on this file organizer helps, but oooh umpth, still can't reach"

"Yes! yippee . . . but hmmmmm . . .how DO I get this hanger down?"

Takoda knows he is not allowed on top of the TV, but doesn't mean he still doesn't try. He would love to pounce on Teacher's cage!

This is exactly why he is up at 3 am - he sleeps with Mook during the day, sigh.

This is one of my fav photos. I had just had heart surgery, had been in hospital a week. and all my guys really missed me. I was sound asleep here.

This was my first day home after having 5 stainless steel stents inserted into my heart veins. Just weeks before I came across a story of a cat named Oscar who lives in a nursing home. Within 4 hours of a patient's death, Oscar lays on the patients bed so no one dies alone, they have Oscar. Sooooooo were my guys worried?

"In reality, cats are probably better off remaining indoors and sending out their humans to deal with the outside world." - Dr. Phyllis Sherman Raschke

When God made the world, He chose to put animals in it, and decided to give each whatever it wanted. All the animals formed a long line before His throne, and the cat quietly went to the end of the line. To the elephant and the bear He gave strength, to the rabbit and the deer, swiftness; to the owl, the ability to see at night, to the birds and the butterflies, great beauty; to the fox, cunning; to the monkey, intelligence; to the dog, loyalty; to the lion, courage; to the otter, playfulness. And all these were things the animals begged of God. At last he came to the end of the line, and there sat the little cat, waiting patiently. "What will YOU have?" God asked the cat.

The cat shrugged modestly. "Oh, whatever scraps you have left over. I don't mind."

"But I'm God. I have everything left over."

"Then I'll have a little of everything, please."

And God gave a great shout of laughter at the cleverness of this small animal, and gave the cat everything she asked for, adding grace and elegance and, only for her, a gentle purr that would always attract humans and assure her a warm and comfortable home.

But he took away her false modesty.
- Lenore Fleischer - The Cat's Pajamas

Aspirin is poisonous to cats.

A cat cannot see directly under its nose. This is why the cat cannot seem to find tidbits on the floor.

Cats lack a true collarbone. Because of this lack, cats can generally squeeze their bodies through any space they can get their heads through. You may have seen a cat testing the size of an opening by careful measurement with the head.

"Places to look: behind the books in the bookshelf, any cupboard with a gap too small for any cat to squeeze through, the top of anything sheer, under anything too low for a cat to squash under and inside the piano."- Roseanne Ambrose-Brown

In ancient Egypt, mummies were made of cats, and embalmed mice were placed with them in their tombs. In one ancient city, over 300,000 cat mummies were found. In ancient Egypt, killing a cat was a crime punishable by death.

Cats eat grass to keep their digestive systems clean. The regurgitation brings up hair and other irritants.
