ASSISTED SUICIDE NO ACT OF COMPASSION "Mercy killings have gone unpunished for decades in [Holland], but their numbers have dramatically accelerated. Elderly or chronically ill patients and deformed or critically ill newborns have long been considered eligible subjects. . . . Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide A Joint Statement by Doctors and Lawyers

Public Opinion on Legalizing Active Euthanasia EDWARD W. KEYSERLINGK, LLM, PH D

Though the Netherlands have legalized voluntary euthanasia - they openly practice infanticide -- but the media and physicians still call this illegal practice "mercy killing."  They are most certainly trying to seduce society into believing that children born with a disability are better off in the hands of the physician, who will put the "unfortunate" out of its misery, by "mercy killing."  That same lie was used more or less successfully during the Nazi reign.  Incredibly but true, in that era, Dutch physician would rather die than kill any human being regardless of ability or race. Now they practice killing without even blushing. [EDITOR]

NAZI EUTHANASIA

Quotes

I am absolutely convinced that the gas chambers of Auschwitz, Treblinka, and Maidanek were ultimately prepared not in some ministry or other in Berlin, but rather at the desks and in the lecture halls of nihilistic scientists and philosophers. Viktor E. Frankl  ~ 1905 - 1997

"At one of the trials, {Nuremburg} the chief female nurse, when asked whether she considered the Russians and Poles to have been murdered, answered," Murder? How do you want me to understand murder? They died from injections." But pressed further whether in her opinion that was murder, she answered, "Yes" ". [THE NAZI DOCTORS, BY JAY LIFTON,†:101.]

The Cost-Effectiveness of Killing: An Overview of Nazi "Euthanasia" John E. Gardella, MD Dr. Hoche pointed out that the "most universal principle is not without exception," and that physicians may in some instances be compelled to destroy life "in the interest of a higher good." He then went on to define those who may be killed "for a higher good," including "complete idiots," and the institutionalized mentally ill who are "empty human shells," whose "existence weighs most heavily on the community."

VIDEO NAZI MEDICINE

NAZI MEDICINE  Important history "The take-home lessons of this documentary—even for American health care professionals—are poignant and substantive. First, our entire current moral underpinnings of clinical research involving the protection of human subjects are fundamentally rooted in the experiences and lessons of the time of the eugenics movement. The fascination of German medical science with an alleged objectivity and distance that largely excluded the concept of human worth produced an amoral scientism as a residue, where true medical science used to flourish. Perhaps most disturbing to physicians is that the Nazi doctors as a group were not amoral but, in fact, allowed their moral compass, which had been fixed on patient-centered medical care, to be realigned by a state-centered power, in which the health of the nation usurped the needs of the individual.

America in 1998 is much different from Germany in 1939. But in these times, when managed care organizations speak of the of the need to consider the "greater good" of the population served, physicians must remember to once again calibrate their moral compass to focus first and foremost upon the patient. Quotes

"The third film, "I Accuse" (Ich klage an, 1941) was unique in that it dealt specifically with medical killing and, in fact, emerged from a suggestion ... that a film be made to persuade the German public to accept the idea of "euthanasia"... the film depicts a physician giving a lethal injection to his incurably ill wife in response to her desperate plea that he do so to relieve her of her terrible pain and suffering. Indeed, a sympathetic member of the jury before whom the physician is eventually tried states categorically that: the most important precondition is always that the patient wants it." ... But "I Accuse" is of respectable artistic quality; and after viewing portions of it, I could understand why doctors I interviewed still felt its impact and remembered the extensive discussion it stimulated among their colleagues and fellow students about the morality of a doctor's aiding incurable patients to achieve the death they long for."  JAY LIFTON, THE NAZI DOCTORS: 49

C H N Epivalothanasia * euthanasia, is a term coined by my friend Dr. Paul Byrne. In a personal letter to me (Cheryl Eckstein), Dr. Byrne said,

. . . I do know that euthanasia is the wrong word for us to be using. The translation of euthanasia from Greek is "good death." We find ourselves being opposed to "good." The correct Greek word for us to be using is Epivalothanasia. Epivalothanasia is the Greek word for "imposed death". . .

Epi- from outside; valo - to thrust upon; thanasia - death; thus, death thrust upon from outside. EPIVALOTHANASIA -- IMPOSED DEATH. . . . Paul Byrne, M.D.

This makes perfect sense to me, and I hope helps us for once and for all - to discard the term "passive euthanasia." Dr. Bryne hopes that epivalothanasia will used "so often and commonly that euthanasia will not be used, unless it is by those in support of the pro-death culture."
